I read Bender's novel The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake and didn't think it was anything special but I wanted to give her another chance since I knew she mostly did short stories. So I picked up Willful Creatures from the library to read.

It was a quick read more from the ability to stop in between stories than not being able to put the book down. I enjoyed a couple of stories for the way they were written, and a couple for their actual story, but mostly I didn't really care for them. She makes good use of the language for each story has its own flavor. The point of view character flavors the story in such a way that they do not sound the same, which is a good thing. Maybe short stories are just not my thing since it wasn't that the stories didn't have happy endings and I don't believe that they need happy endings.

So my affair with Bender is at an end. I don't think I'll be reading anymore of her stuff. i wouldn't say it is bad, it's just not for me.
