it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy, fantasy-heroines, high-fantasy, magic, wizards

Wow, this was really amazing, one of the rare books that I start reading and it almost hurts to have to put it down. Reads like a mashup of thief/assassin fantasy and hardboiled detective novels (I could almost hear Amra saying in a female Humphrey Bogart voice "I knew he was trouble the moment he walked in"). Amra is a skilled thief dedicated to her profession, with a strict code of honor that includes not letting whoever murders her best friend get away with it. Engaging, well-drawn characters, exciting action, and an intriguing mystery in a well-done fantasy world, in a setting more reminiscent of 18th-century Europe than the middle ages, all told in Amra's wry, world-weary voice. The sequels are going on my must-read-asap list.
