I read this book for the first time in Jr. High and even I'm surprised at how I clicked w/ this book when I was that young. It's so hard to explain why I felt so at home with this book, I just did.

It is the story of family life in a small Chinese village before the 1949 revolution. The story focuses on Wang Lung, a simple country farmer. We follow him from the day of his wedding to a house slave he bought from the Great House of Hwang, and we follow him through good times and bad, the birth of his children, droughts, floods, famine, extreme poverty to good fortune and wealth.

I've always felt as if someone was telling me a story, as if this was a documentary. Whether you liked the characters or not, here they are faults and all. Life is what it was then, and the author makes no excuses for it.

I plan on finishing this series soon and look forward to my 5th and 6th re-read.
