really liked it

** spoiler alert ** Mark Oliver Everett III is better know simply as E, the man who basically makes up the band Eels. This man has not had a happy existence, as anyone familiar with his musical output could probably guess, and this beautifully crafted memoir will tell you why. Having lost every single member of his family in varying tragic ways, E has somehow managed to keep ploughing on through life and essentially getting on with it in a sort of 'Musn't grumble' fashion that would do the Stoics proud. This is an exquisitely sad book, but E knows, above all else, that life, be it monumentally shit or otherwise, is life, and it must be dealt with. He has managed to do so with the help of a quite freakily detached manner of observing it, and of course his music, and that above all else has kept him going when at times it would have been easier just to lie down, close his eyes, and never get up again. This book is a simple telling of a sad life that may or may not eventually, at least, level off to some sort of acceptable level of happiness; the author is obviously still trying to figure it all out and you are left hoping, rather than hopeful, at the end.
