it was amazing
bookshelves: 2015, fiction, reviewed, young-adult, middle-grade

This was lovely and heartbreaking and deeply enjoyable. There's so much going on in this book--from divorce to sexting to friendship to betrayals to feminism to first love and so much more. And somehow Rebecca Stead juggles it all, beautifully, and writes a compelling story of the ups and downs of middle school in the modern era. I'm not 100% convinced that these middle schoolers feel like real middle schoolers--the way they talk seems a bit more high school to me--but they deal with issues that I think can very realistically happen in middle school, and the resolutions and ways they are dealt with don't feel too neat or wrapped up too easily, and I really enjoyed all of the characters, so for me that's a minor quibble.

Although this is marketed as middle grade, it's the top end of the middle grade range--pretty solidly aimed at middle school, and it feels more YA to me.
