You can tell that Carey was finding his stride as he wrote these novels - there's a definite air of polish that his earlier books didn't have. The magic system continues to impress, both in its relatively sketchy definition and with the relative delicacy with which Carey applies it. The characterization isn't nearly as strong as many of the other examples of the genre, but they're still engaging tales worth reading.
