So first I watched "The Last Station" and thought it was great. Then I got this book and even though I know how it ends for Leo and Sonya in Russia in the early 1900s, it has been fascinating to get the background to the movie and a time period about which I know too little. Leo and Sonya were married for 48 years and both kept extensive diaries. Seems it would have been relatively easy for Shirer to read the diaries and put this book together. He does a good job with it. First-hand historical information is really a gift to the future and makes me realize how much of a loss it is now that all our thoughts are "out there" and not being preserved. Now I've decided I must read "War and Peace"!
