Naipaul is the kind of writer who makes one want to be the traveler without a camera and sneakers. This book is about his recent travels in Africa. Witchcraft exists alongside "mainstream" religions as a strong influence on African lives. Violence and retribution are part of the practice of witchcraft. Is it any wonder, the author seems to ask us, that much of the modern politics in Africa is steeped in such violence?
