Moth Smoke is a poem on the state of a nation, cleverly disguised in the form of a thriller. Pakistan's class system, feudalism, the extent to which money talks...all these themes are covered in a high-paced narrative of frustration, ambition, hedonism, and lust. Hamid is a natural-born writer; his insight into the human condition allows him to create characters that delight, thrill, and haunt you. The female character, Mumtaz, is possibly the most bewitching character ever created in a novel. His love affair with Lahore is also evident; the city is given breath and a soul through the power of his words.

Anyone who is interested in understanding how writing evokes emotion would do well to read Moth Smoke.
