Jane Yolen is a wonderful young adult writer. I love her fantasy novels, and this one is no exception. This is the first in the Pit Dragon Trilogy, about a young "nobody" slave who learns to steal a dragon's egg and warm it and feed it so that it bonds with him. The love between Jakkin and his young dragon is very palpable, and it is impossible not to root for him. What is possible, however, is to wish that loving a dragon in this world is the only way out for a human like Jakkin, because that dragon will fight other dragons using the mental communication formed in the bonding of the two. I hate blood sports, and yet I love Jane Yolen. What's a reader to do? Well, I read this whole book, which is the first in the Pit Dragon Trilogy (a fourth is on the way), and sadly put away the other two which I bought. I loved the dragons too much to fear for their lives every time they fought. I'm so sorry, Jane. You are such a great writer, you actually made me not able to read what you wrote because I felt it so deeply.
