I find this series fun to read but very thinly plotted. Big save-the-world adventures hinge on a few sentences of explanation. The result is a lack of danger and suspense. Even still, it is enjoyable to watch the story unfold, mostly because of Percy who narrates his adventures.

Besides readings these books for fun, I also like to be aware of my competition in the re-imagining Olympic gods fiction genre. (When I started writing my book a few years ago, I had no idea this even was a genre.) It was eerie to read about two of my main characters imagined completely differently than I have imagined them (Artemis and Apollo). I like what Riordan has done with them both -- and I'm so glad our ideas are not similar!
