really liked it

Mags is settling into life as a Herald Trainee with best friends Lena and Bear, hoped-for-girlfriend Amily, and Companion Dallen. He is busy learning everything most kids have already learned while he struggled for survival as a mine worker searching for sparklies. When Dallen Chose him, everything seemed to be paradise. But Mags' native intelligence is masked behind his improper grammar. The King's Own Nikolas recruits Mags to spy on some "furriners" who may be planning to assassinate the king. Mags is kept running, investigating plots, learning Kirball, and wrestling with "them language classes." When Valdemar's Foreseers have a vision of Mags and the King covered in blood, suspicion is diverted onto Mags. In despair, Dallen and he recklessly race on the Kirball course. A psychic jarring throws Mags off balance and Dallen breaks both front legs. Thinking he is possessed by evil, Mags runs away and exists in misery until he inadvertently stumbles on the solution. I liked this book as it was about the Heralds of Valdemar and their Companions. I have read all of the books in this series since Mercedes Lackey started writing them about 20 years ago. Poor Mags - he has led a hard life but it seems like things are looking up now. The ending states that another book is in the works.
