If you have just picked up this book, then it is not too late to put it back down, because once you start reading about the unfortunate events that the Baudelaire orphans encounter in this book, you will no longer be able to imagine that they have encountered any good fortune instead. Within the pages of this book they encounter lots of stairs to climb not only up, but down as well, a lot of the time in the dark. They come across a red herring or two, friends in a dire situation, a liar, parsley soda and a secret mysterious passageway.

All in all the three Baudelaire orphans have a bad time of it as usual especially as a lot of it is due to Count Olaf yet again in yet another bad disguise. The adults yet again are oblivious and completely useless when the Baudelaires talk to them about the bad disguise, and yet again the Baudelaire orphans have to expose him, to have him, yet again to get away as the adults are useless at preventing him from getting away.
