This is the second book in the Snowcroft series, but can be read as a standalone.

Dex Jasper was an out-gay rocker, guitarist and lead vocalist for Black Rainbows, when the vindictive ex of his bassist, and a notorious mafioso Freddie, blew their concert to Kingdom Come--killing the three other bands members and wounding Dex. Due to Freddie's mob connections, the FBI wants him put away for good, but Dex isn't safe. While awaiting trial, Dex is given a new WITSEC identity, and shuttled around the country. A year has passed and Dex still suffers nightmares and migraines from his injuries in the explosion. His new watchdog, Law Wyman, has arranged for them to hide in tiny Snowcroft, a mountain town in rural New Mexico.

Posing as half-brothers Finn and Law Alexander, Dex/Finn takes a job as music teacher in the Snowcroft middle school. He meets Jack, owner of the local watering hole, Logger's, and single father to Kelsey, one of Finn's soon-to-be students. There is a quick attraction for both men. Jack has been closeted his whole life, even having married. His (then ex-) wife died three years ago from breast cancer. The close proximity of Finn, Law and Jack is further cemented when Law takes a job at Logger's.

Jack deals with a lot of grief/guilt over his decisions with Kelsey's mother. He knew before they married that he was gay, but before he could break things off Kelsey was conceived. He's not ready to be "out" but he also can't deny his attraction for Finn, who is both sexy and mysterious. Finn hasn't felt any attraction for anyone since his bandmates died. He's suffered both depression and PTSD, so finding Jack appealing brings him back to humanity, a bit. Their steps towards each other aren't terribly slow for a closet case and a WITSEC informant, but it works. Each man is hungry for the comfort the other can provide.

Complications arise because Kelsey is a huge fan of Black Rainbows, and Jack is suspicious of all the backstory snafu's. Also, Jack wants to remain closeted. Finn (Dex) knows how fleeting life is and isn't sure he can hold back, plus, he doesn't know how long he'll remain in Snowcroft. Expect blowouts of the tween population, and vengeful mobsters who like to play with their prey. Some gruesomeness on the page. The "out"ing happens all at once, not only of Jack's sexuality, but his attraction to Finn, as well as Finn's cover story...

I liked the story. It was interesting with good pacing. There are some nice sexytimes, and thrilling parts near the end. We get an HEA, eventually, though some of the climax felt rushed. I received a review copy of this book via NetGalley.
