Like the previous part of the series, this one suffers from being in the middle, too. It's definitely not a stand-alone novel. Wolves of the Calla also spends a fair amount of time on sub plots. Not as much as Wizard and Glass, the previous installment, but still quite a lot.

I was not a huge fan of the back story section that took up most of Wizard and Glass, and was disappointed that the main plot hardly advanced in that book. The main story line gets a lot more space in this one, but I still feel there was too much other stuff going on. And once again, the digressions were not as interesting as the main plot line.

So, although this book was better than the last one, it's still not as good as the earlier volumes. I liked it overall, though, and will keep reading the series.
