This was much darker than I expected. It was, in fact, completely sick and twisted. The use of the smell in the plot reminded me more of a Poe story than anything else.

The plot structure was very similar to McEwan's other books. The pivotal moment occurs early in the book and everything unfolds from there, for better or--mostly--worse. Both the writing was harsher and less subtle, though, and made the book an unpleasant experience. I'm glad he kept writing, but I didn't need to read this book.
