Necromancer Awakening is an interesting and original fantasy novel with a very different kind of magic that also makes some profound reflections on topics such as faith, redemption, priesthood, and the relationship between life and death. Nicolas, an archaeology student in Texas, is plagued by horrifying visions whenever he's in the presence of death - and especially in the wake of his adoptive father's funeral. The visions lead to him being swept from Texas to another world, where he discovers the reasons for his visions - he's a necromancer, a wizard-priest who uses the power of death to purify the dead.

In this world, the power of death is good and useful, used to benefit those who have died, while it's life magic, which comes from a horrifying source, that is evil. It's an interesting turnaround on expectations, and Nicolas himself has trouble coming to terms with his unexpected talent and what it means. We follow Nicolas through his training, first with a banished but very powerful human necromancer and then in a civilization of strange creatures who have to learn to accept him for who he is even as he has to learn to accept them - and himself for who he is. The danger of "wizard in training" novels is that it's too easy for them to be boring, with this lecture and that lecture and this test and that test, but Necromancer Awakening skips the boring parts and focuses on the highly unusual aspects of this magic and on Nicolas's personal journey to acceptance of his calling and his destiny. There's also plenty of action, fights and adventures and discovering all the strange and different aspects of this world.

Eventually, in his quest to find his way home again to his beagle Toby and fiancee Kaitlin (who might have a greater role to play than just being the love interest left behind), Nicolas has to restore the balance in this world in which necromancy is banned and life magic has nearly destroyed all life. His growth through the book is impressive, and he becomes a true hero.

Well-written, with engaging characters and a highly orginal world and magic system. I'm looking forward to the release of the next book in the series, to find out what happens next!
