I really enjoyed the first two parts of this book, where Ruth remembers her childhood with her widowed mother Liu in San Fransisco, and Liu remembers the truths of her childhood in China.

Unfortunately the book became immersed in curses and ghosts beyond references incidental to ancient Chinese culture. I didn't finish reading the book, but I instantly enjoyed the book, I was interested in the characters and moved by the story and look forward to other Amy Tan novels.
