Whimsical and deliciously dark at times, The Sleeper and The Spindle is a retold fairytale featuring a not-quite Sleeping Beauty and a sword-weilding Snow White.

The moment I set my eyes on the book cover, I knew I need to have this beauty in my possession. I was beyond delighted when I found out that this tale is accompanied with gorgeous illustrations by Chris Riddell (who also drew for the macabre children's story, The Graveyard Book. Another favourite!). Coupled with Neil Gaiman's excellent, lyrical prose The Sleeper and The Spindle has successfully met my idea of a true whimsy fairytale.

After waking from a year long magical sleep, Her Majesty the Queen is set to marry a young prince soon. Meanwhile, a sleeping sickness is spreading far and wide in other parts of her Kingdom. When news and tales of old reached Her Majesty, she called for the servants to bring forth her chainmail and sword then finally, mounting on a horse she takes off with her brave Dwarves with a rescue mission in mind.

Are you dead tired of Princes coming to the damsel's rescue? Do you roll your eyes at the idea of Happily Ever Afters that always seems so final and resolute? Have you ever question what other alternate endings to a fairytale could be?

If your answers to all the above is a yes. I highly recommend picking this up. However, cast aside your expectations for solid characterizations because there will be next to none. This is one of those books with no room for that.

Despite the lack of depths, Gaiman has still managed to eliminate most classics fairytale tropes in 70 pages or less. I find the twists to be cleverly done and the final reveal certainly has that satisfying smackdown effect for me and best of all, Gaiman offered choices. Such as the choice for Her Majesty to pick her own Happily Ever After, and what a change that is.
