A servicable book that is better read as the excerpt in the New Yorker. The plot is one you've heard/read/seen a thousand times, I would briefly describe it, but that would spoil the experience; although in fairness, at its core the plot is such a tired old chestnut that it has already been spoiled.

All this is dressed up in a terrifying, vaguely pornographic, depiction of a near future America. This particular device is unappealing for two reasons: 1) it's a gimmicky way of getting the reader to identify with the novel by getting them to identify with particular parts of the scenery (Central Park! Staten Island! e-readers!); 2) it's explicit without the slightest touch of eroticism, which is perhaps the author's point, one he loves to pound home again, and again, and again...

I'd like to describe this book as a pair of socks wrapped in a box for something you really want, like a Christmas present gone wrong. Unfortunately, it turns out the box is not even for something you wanted.
