** spoiler alert ** This was a great read! I really enjoyed this book. What I liked most was that the authors did not ask the reader to suspend all belief to follow their idea. For example, the decision to March around Gettysburg was a combination of Longstreet's personality and Lee's. The authors did not do a complete 180 degree turn on any character's personality. They made a slight deviation in the decision regarding the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg then played it out to its logical conclusion. While I enjoyed their portrayal of very famous historical figures such as the President and Generals all Civil War Enthusiast know and love, but they also followed minor characters, the most significant being Brigadier General Henry Hunt. Following his view of the battle and the politics that played out in the decisions made was extremely interesting to me. While of course there are decisions that the characters make that could be argued, the intent of this book was to show how a different decisions could lead to different outcomes. I am excited to read the next book in the series to see how the authors play out the rest of the war. I thought the battle scenes rivaled those written by Stephen Pressfield. The feelings of fighting old comrades and recognizing great acts of valor on the battlefield came through vividly throughout the book.
I believe that this is great Civil War Read and should become, if its not already, a classic.
