The White Mountains was one of the first young adult novels that I read. As a young reader I was entranced by the adventure story of three boys looking to escape "capping", which would turn them into ordinary adults who are controlled by the alien Tripods (or drive them crazy if it went wrong). Their journey through what was is easily recognized as Europe made me eager to travel to exotic lands. The story stayed with me and I returned to the book as an adult but had a very different relationship with it. As a gay man I identified with the fear of the boys being turned into something they were not, and my similar escape from my rural home town for the sanctuary of New York City, where I could live on my own terms in the company of other like-minded boys. I recently replaced my dog-eared paperback with a first edition paperback rescued from a library.
