really liked it
bookshelves: contemporary, ya, giveaways

I was expecting a fluffy YA romance, but this book delivered more than that. It tackled topics of race, class, and immigration.

I would suggest this book for teens to get a view of a poor student who has to put the needs of her family above her own. Many teens who grow up middle class do not understand that not everyone has all of their needs met, let alone extra cash for luxuries.

“I like the idea of feeling small. Sometimes life can seem bigger than you, you know? But knowing you're less than a speck in the whole scheme of things takes the pressure off, sort of.”
