I feel so guilty giving a pulitzer prize winning novel two stars, but I didn't feel connected to any of the characters or the story. it happens sometimes I guess. I found myself skimming and hurrying up just to get it over with. there is certainly beautiful language in this book, but I just didn't have the patience for the meditative style of writing. the quotes from a book sprinkled throughout always caught me off guard and I felt interrupted the story. the constant change in voice annoyed me. and I'll admit that some of the mixed metaphors drove me batty. I don't know what it says that I felt more emotionally engaged in a story narrated by a dog than this one.

40.0% "I want to love this book, I really do. there are moments I can't put it down and others when I'm pushing myself to continue. I think it's a combination of late night reading and train of thought writing. the writing is beautiful and irksome."
