really liked it
bookshelves: contemporary-fiction

The high-concept conceit of a novel narrated by a five-year-old could have been annoying, but it actually worked as a way to tell this story from a true outsider's innocent perspective. I like that Donoghue avoids the obvious "ripped from the headlines" possibilities and makes this more than an obvious escape story; the tension of the rescue is well drawn and makes the book impossible to put down at that point, but the happy ending isn't really the ending, and perhaps that's the point.
