Dear Ammon,

Sorry, but no can do. I don't care how great the writing is, I avoid the entire genre of drug-addiction-books like the plague. This kind of stuff messes with my head too much. I don't care if it is "realism," I like my imaginary world where people are nice to each other and not high all the time far too much.

Also, junkies totally freak me out.

You promised "redemption" at the end, but my friend Elizabeth, who has read this book (and has a much stronger stomach than me) says she is still haunted years later by a story involving harm to puppies ("and I don't even have dogs!" she adds) and urges me to STOP NOW, before my psyche is permanently polluted.

Maybe I could handle the drug use, rape, and murder - but puppy torture? No way!

I have great respect for your tastes, Ammon, and I'm not saying the guy doesn't have a way with words, but maybe you didn't realize how soft I really am? Sorry I'm not as cool as you thought.

Abandoning ship!

*Scurries back to sedate, 19th century, drawing-room romances where nothing happens.*
