really liked it

This one was pretty good. I see the comparisons to George R.R. Martin in regards to the intrigue and politics. There's quite a bit of political manuevering in this book. The action is well described but especially in the naval warfare. I don't think I have read anyone who has put as much precise detail into such battles.

So far nothing overly creative in regards to the magical system utilized as we get a look at some of the familiar directions that many writers have taken though with a slightly different approach. You have werewolves (Shifters) and some of your basic magic concepts. But this is only book one and it really was not a focal point of the story (well except for the Shifters to a degree). I would say its worth picking up. I'm plunging on to book two.
