I never had to read this book in school. And now that I'm an English teacher, I will never make my students read this book. There is little to no conflict to make me want to read the next chapter. The "narrator" is flat out boring. Besides his mild infatuation with Antonio, he is a wet blanket. Even Antonio, the supposed mystique, is boring, perhaps due to the vapid narration. The descriptions and prose are fine, but not remarkable. Everything you "get" from this novel you can "get" from a more interesting and entertaining book. "Winesburg, Ohio" is a much better book about small town life.
