Curt Lorde One of the grimmest books around. Wright,Baldwin, and Himes were the 'authorized' male Black writers I read as a teen and young man, when it wasn't the sagas of Iceberg Slim/ Robert Beck ( who turned out a several good stories of the 'Other Side of Life' and Donald Goines the premier ghetto gutbuster writer. A fool, a cowardly thug and a victim trapped in the slot made out for him and tens of thousands then and now.

Valjeanne Jeffers Brother Curt:

Richard Wright is brillant, but I didn't like "Bigger," which is why I gave Native Son four stars instead of five. I couldn't identify with Bigger or the choices he made; unlike "Cross Damon" (The Outsider) who's a very likable character even though he's a murder too.

Also, I've been told that the choice of making "Bigger" a monster was the editor's call and not Richard Wright's.

Curt Lorde That's why I call him a fool and a coward. Far as i.ding with him, I recognized several flavors of Bigger Thomases in growing up.
