really liked it

Gunning does a great job with tons of historical details and I'd say the setting, place and characters are more well-done than the story. For the first time in a long time I think the cover does justice to the story and there's a map at the end of the book that should really be at the beginning.

What were our forefathers thinking when they decreed that a wife widowed should receive 1/3 of a house? As this book shows, how can you divide a house--especially one where so much work needs to be done--like that?

Lyddie is 39 when she is widowed. It's a sign of how women's bodies have changed over time and age later, because I kept thinking, don't they need to worry about pregnancy? I guess not! Also note how the 1761 church has no social services to help anyone--quite a change from now.
