** spoiler alert ** Rollicking historical fiction in which no one should be trusted. It dragged a bit in the middle when there's a lot of talking and little in the way of answers, but it picks up before long. The end reveal when almost everyone turned out to be not who they seemed got a little silly, and the set up was crazily complicated and dropped down almost all at once at the end, but all in all this is a grabbing (just below gripping) read. The historical detail is astounding, the main character and his situations are entertaining, the dialogue is just as you'd expect for the 18th century, full of cleverness and humor. Definitely recommended.
