it was ok

Wow, the blatant misogyny that not only runs through this entire book but in fact fairly fundamentally determines the plot is not something that figured prominently into my happy childhood memories of beloved Xanth. There are some moments where Anthony's humor and brilliance come through, but overall this book was actually hard to get through for me. The characters' reasoning through the magic and its consequences is tedious rather than charming and engaging the way it is in the later books, and the ubiquitous and strident disparaging of women - going so far as to include a rape trial that concludes in a "not guilty" sentence because the assailant and victim knew each other prior to the crime - made me want to throw the book against the wall every page or so. Do yourself a favor and skip ahead to the later Xanth books and pretend those from his earlier phase don't exist; that's my plan.
