** spoiler alert ** A beautifully written story about life in the forest, and the beauties and dangers there. It was written so that you feel compassion not only for the animals, but even for a couple leaves hanging from a tree before winter.

It was sad, though, that a major theme was choosing separation from those you love. Bambi, like his father, chose to separate himself from others, including his mate, Faline. Perhaps it was more noble and princely to be silent, mysterious and alone. And perhaps it was for the purpose of safety from "Him." Whatever the reason, I just wanted Bambi to be different from his father. At the end, I wanted Bambi to follow his impulse to go to Faline, who was walking through the forest looking old and sad. But he didn't.

I read this book to my 5-year-old, and I think most of it went over his head. So I'm certainly open to any recommendations for good read-aloud chapter books for a 5-year-old boy. Anyone?
