What makes this book so good isn't the story, though the story is enjoyable enough, it's the writing. Arthur Golden blew me away with his rich style and attention to detail. I loved learning about the culture through Chiyo's eyes. He provided enough information without overwhelming the reader with too much history or being didactic. The characters are well developed and the history beautifully unfolded. I was impressed by how well Golden was able to write from the perspective of a woman and I had no difficulty relating to the characters. The ending was a tad predictable, but so well constructed that I found I really didn't mind. I sincerely hope this is not the last we will hear from such a stunning author.
