really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, ya

It has been months since I read this book, and initially, I had said I needed to "chew on it" (pun intended) a bit before making a call.

Seven months and easily seventy books later, this story has stuck. In part, of course, because of the premise including Maren, a cannibalistic teen female main character. That's memorable. But also, I remember something the author said about Maren's curse not being an addiction or something that can be battled and overcome. Maren's cannibalism is in her genes -- it's who she is. Early on, Maren says, "Memories distort themselves, turning over into truths that are easier to live with," and she acknowledges she's been okay living that way but that it's time to seek the truth. Even though I had a bunch of questions about various characters' motives for their actions, I think the book was solid.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press for providing me a print copy in exchange for my honest review -- the only kind I give.
