Ghastly. I am not sure what to say, but I do thank the author for clearing up many misconceptions and myths. Although, the truth of what happened is, honestly, worse than I had imagined. What troubles me the most is how this group of pioneers (or more accurately, a certain few of them) behaved well before they were stranded in the depths of the snow. I was shocked to hear that there was a murder - over the handling of horses. I guess a foreshadowing of more murders to come. I know some of the group were religious, I wonder if things would have turned out a bit different if they had some common belief, besides rich farm land in California. I have read about quite a few pioneer treks, and some had encountered exactly - if not worse - conditions than the Donner Party. There were arguments, anger, loss of hope, but they all mostly did their best to look out for eachother at the end of the day. The Donner Party was doomed from the start, political forces were at work, money hungry exploiters were working harder and the members of the Donner Party were their own worst enemy. To make myself clear, I do not judge their actions, I have never been even close to that hungry or cold - they were surviving, BUT if only they could have come together and shared what they did have... if only, if only....

Julie I must say, you are really into reading the gritty stuff. How about something light for a change. I have a suggestion in that genre if you ever feel the need to get out of the depths of despair(:

Selina I know I love it when people suffer, what does that say about me?? Correction: I love when humans suffer and then overcome.
