really liked it
bookshelves: history, renaissance

This is the story of a 16th century miller who was tried by the Italian Inquisition for heresy. It's somewhat of a microhistory based on surviving trial records. However, it also takes a look at the culture of the non-powerful classes vs. the culture of dominant classes, and how the differences might be lost to history, since the former was less likely to be recorded. If you're interested in culture as mediated by class, or in how a person might evolve his own religious ideas in a time when this was even more strongly discouraged than it is now, you should give his one a read.
