From the cover, you might expect "Fakie" to be a skate story, and there is a bit of that. But this is actually a good action story, one that starts out quickly enough and moves along even faster. Because this is a plot driven story, Alex isn't the most fully-fleshed out character, but Varrato doesn't let up the pace long enough for that to matter.

As a book for a reluctant reader, this is a good choice. Although there is some violence of the sort you'd find on "Law and Order," the language is clean. This might be a starting point that could lead to The Last Thing I Remember or Reality Check.
