liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, fiction

** spoiler alert ** I liked the premise of the novel and some of the characters were interesting. I especially liked crotchety Rath with his hidden marshmallow center. The thing is that the action, which was very actiony, somehow lagged a whole lot in the middle and then again towards the end. I also found it hard on me to have to continue feeling such deep awe for the other main character, Jewel. She's just so good - to the point she puts herself in physical danger so a crazy foundling she took in (who she doesn't even trust) can get revenge on the bad men who hurt her. Obviously, this ends badly. I loved the underground city and the interesting way in which Rath's soft heart is slowly revealed, but Jewel's collection of orphans left me cold. I just didn't care for the high-handed way she seemed to be building some kind of orphan army against injustice. Oh well, I finished it anyway.
