Catherine Gildiner's memoirs (this and the equally good Too Close to the Falls) remind me a lot of Jeannette Walls' books--they're purportedly true, but they nevertheless have a sort of tall-tale quality about them. The slightly exaggerated style of storytelling actually enhances the reader's enjoyment, though, and makes the books highly addictive. I strongly recommend this underrated author.
