An unlikely story that nevertheless left my children laughing out loud. They especially liked the train rides and the idea that South Pole explorers would be lonely if it weren't for their penguin friends. When I finished the last page my five-year-old said, "Aww! Mommy, let's see if we can find more books about Mr Popper's penguins."

This one was fun to read aloud, although it was a little strange that Mr and Mrs Popper referred to one another as Papa and Mama. My grandparents refer to one another as Grandma and Grandpa but only when the grands (or great-grands) are around. Although now that I think of it, I'm always around when I'm in their presence, so I guess I don't have direct evidence for this. Maybe they actually call each other Grandma and Grandpa all of the time. But I'm pretty sure they have no penguins.
