It's apparent what the author wanted to say. It would have been nice to have a more entertaining story behind the message: "the death penalty is wrong." At least all the main characters are against it, and those who aren’t are portrayed as blood thirsty, ignorant, etc. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not ready to run down to the nearest death row prison and chant “kill them all.” No, I support the decision of a state to determine the appropriate punishment for the crime, based on what the law says is appropriate, not my definition. This book spent too much time dragging things out and not enough time ever getting to a real point. I chuckled a couple of times when Sam and other inmates laughed at the expense of Mr. Nugent, but that was the extent of my entertainment. Why couldn’t there have been more with the accomplice (real killer)? I just think this was more a story built around a personal agenda, instead of a message built into a good story. I prefer the latter.
