This was a romance with the usual hero and the beautiful heiress, but the setting of the Chicago fire in 1871 that begins the novel makes it a little different. There is also a lot about the fishing families on the islands in Lake Superior. So, the time period and the places make the novel more than a typical romance. This is an easy, fast read, perfect for the beach. Because the author does a good job with historical aspect, the romance part only enters late in the novel. The author has two other novels dealing with the Chicago Fire and with characters from this novel, so it will be interesting to read those, too, to find out how people were changed by this major event.
