So... I read this book around the time it came out because I was in eighth grade. I reread it recently, and it still remains one of my favorite imprisonment stories because gosh darn it, she manages to keep some humour about her imprisonment, even though the six years have taken their toll on her. The descriptions of everything in China during the Cultural Revolution was exquisitely done, and I got swept up in the history. I actually believe that this book influenced me in choosing the modern history of China as one of my areas of study at University.
