A friend of mine gave The Name of the Wind to me as a birthday gift (thanks, Jason) when he heard that I was enjoying the Game of Thrones series. Based on that alone, I was expecting something similar: an epic fantasy yarn with ample sex, violence, and intrigue. Boy, was I wrong. I kept reading and reading waiting for something big and exciting to happen and nothing like that really did happen. Yet, I still found myself turning from page to page, which is proof of the engaging story that the author did tell. It's a small, personal story, peppered with the occasional mystery that the author uses to keep the reader involved. The fantasy elements are pretty low-key and the author does a great job of world-building. This book isn't the most exciting page-turner, but it does tell an interesting and personal story. Recommended.
