If American foreign policy-makers in the late 1950s-early 1960s had read this book they would have saved 55,000 American lives, millions of Vietnamese lives and billions of dollars in American dollars. Green's protagonist, British journalist Tom Fowler, takes the reader through the utter folly of France's attempt to hold Viet Nam, spelling out all the mistakes that America would follow and repeat in the years to come. This book is short, true, compelling, and sexy.
