While I enjoyed the book, it had several flaws that kept me from giving it a higher rating. I would certainly consider reading the author's later books, to see if the writing improved.
The central "villains" of the book bothered me. Most of the supernatural creatures bore at least SOME resemblance to the way they have been portrayed in folklore, but the Auph simply did not. Worse, there was never a reason given for the discrepancy. Even now, I can't picture them in my mind, although I have a clear mental image of the central characters and even the troll. It's as if Cal's aversion to them clouded the author's mind, or something.
On the other hand, I would like to see more of the central characters and the surviving peripheral ones, which is a good sign. So, my rating is kind of a 3+...but nowhere near a 4, which is why I didn't round up.
