Gone to Earth
Was it Angela Carter who said that melodrama has served women writers well? This is the case with this unflinchingly tender-hearted book-- its plot is unexpectedly riveting, fuelled by a kind of fever-dream like clarity, using fox hunting as an allegory in its righteous quarrel against patriarchy. There is so much fight in this book, and so much beauty, it feels as if it were written in blood. Astonishing.
