The Shadow Catcher melds two stories. The first is a fictional retelling of the life, through the eyes of his wife, of Edward Curtis, famed photographer who made his name photographing Native Americans, a people he believed to be on the brink of disappearing as the West was developed and their lands and lifestyle challenged. The second is the author's own story of researching the life of Curtis and having to decide what story to portray as truths about this hero of the west and the photographs that made him famous emerged. While I found the structure of this book interesting, the writing itself felt forced - overuse of italics for emphasis and stilted dialogue. But if you like historical fiction, there is much to be learned here about photographs that you have most likely seen and the story behind them.
