I wanted to know what the heck happened to make the Cold War end so suddenly and for the Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellite states to stop being Communist. 600 pages later, I know.

The front cover blurb on my edition says "SUPERB .. A hugely readable book". Let's go with "PRETTY GOOD ... thorough, dry, but readable".

The back cover blurb from The Economist says "As a single-volume account [...:] Mr. Browns's book is hard to beat" - that's probably true. This covers every Communist country and explains the factions and policy differences along the way.

So if you also are wondering "how did the Cold War come to such a quick end" - this book will tell you. Worth reading, but it takes a while to get through.
